Getting ready for the Terrible Ideas Hackathon

👋 Welcome to the first of (hopefully) a series of updates about the upcoming Terrible Ideas Hack! We'll cover a bit about the event's history, how our preparations are going, and (if you're coming) a bit of what to bring. Starting off with a short origin story:

How we "came up" with the idea

Something you might not know is that the Terrible Ideas Hackathon isn't the first of it's kind! The idea comes from a number of similarly-named events in the US:

While we'll get into project ideas in a future update, take a peek at some of the stuff our friends over in the states have made for a taste on how crazy things can get!

As you can see, we tweaked the name a bit, dropping "Stupid Shit". We also scavenged bits and pieces from each, cobbling together something sort of new. We reached out to the original creators, of course, and got their blessing to port the event to a local audience. Introducing, the Terrible Ideas Hackathon 2021:

Over time we've changed a few things about the weekend, making it more explicitly open to people of all sorts of interests, adding more illustrations and organic touches, and building up the secret power of Terrible Ideas to be more about the magic of just making a thing.

It turns out that when you stop stressing about whether it's good or not, you get to spend a lot more time being creative and building friendships, which makes for a great first introduction to making or a fantastic creative reset. It's something to look forward to :)
