Terrible Ideas: One week to go

Less than a week to go until the 2025 Terrible Ideas Hackathon here in Tāmaki Makaurau. The atmosphere amongst the team is positively bubbling and we can't wait for our kick off this Friday, March 14th.

If you haven't already registered, now would be a great time to do so. Registering helps us understand what to expect, and how much to prepare.

The Terrible Ideas Hackathon is a 46 hour challenge to come up with and create the most fantastically terrible things. It's a weekend to stretch your creative muscles, and for many their first experiences making something with friends. Past projects have included a three-seater mobility couch, clip on bike jandals, and a kettle with ad breaks.
Some projects from 2023 and 2024.

Some information to tide you over. We'll repeat all of this via email on Friday.

Discord & staying in touch

We'll still be using email for widespread communications, but Discord will be your best place to stay in the loop during the weekend.

When & where to be

Terrible Ideas is taking place at the University of Auckland Unleash Space (enter from Symonds Street). The schedule for Friday is as follows:

  • 6:00 PM - Terrible Ideas kicks off with a presentation
  • 7:00 PM - Ice breakers, team forming, and ideation
  • 10:30 PM - Venue closes for the night

When you arrive, stop by our registration desk to check in! We'll give you a snazzy lanyard with important information like the Wi-Fi password, map of restrooms, and contact details in case of emergency.

Parking & transport

Whilst we recommend using public transport, the Owen G Glenn Building has $6/day parking on the weekend (enter from Grafton Road). Princes Street has free parking on Sundays. Check this university page for more information.

What to bring

If you want to make something physical, we've got you covered! The Unleash Space has a wide variety of tools to help you turn your dream into reality. This includes WiFi, power outlets, laser cutters, 3d printers, vinyl cutters, and a workshop of other tools.

For the first night, just bring a laptop and/or a notepad and pen. You can bring in anything else you need on Saturday.

Sorry for the info dump! Reach out of you have any question, and see you soon.
